MIXED MARTIAL ARTS.
Mixed martial arts started to become popular in the early nineties. For decades practitioners and fans of martial arts had would debate over which art was most effective. “Who would win between a karate master and a good boxer?” “What would happen if a wrestler fought a kick boxer?” “What about a judo player versus an accomplished street fighter?” The early UFC fights (Ultimate Fighting Champions) in America set out to prove which art was the most effective. From the beginning one art surprised everyone in dominating the sport when a family named Gracie from Rio De Janiero in Brazil, led at that time by Royce Gracie seemed to beat all other styles including boxing, wrestling and the more traditional eastern martial arts.
Over the next fifteen years there were shifts in the styles that seemed to work and be most effective. We have seen dominance at different periods from different styles. Wrestling has spent a time of dominance led by Mark Coleman and Matt Hughes. Muay Thai practitioners are seeing a level of success led by the likes of Anderson Silva and Kenny Florian. But no single art now dominates. Mixed Martial Arts or MMA has become a sport of its own with practitioners taking and tweaking the best bits from a lot of arts and forming a kind of hybrid system that is still very much in its infancy and evolving. Practitioners need to not only learn but be prolific at stand up fighting (such as boxing, kick boxing and Muay Thai), Takedowns and takedown defence (learnt by wrestling and Judo), ground work such as chokes, strangles and joint manipulation (Jiu Jitsu). As well as this MMA practitioners need to be extremely fit and strong. This fitness needs to be specific to the type of conditions the athlete will surely face in a competitive fight situation.
